No, we are not on X. Or LinkedIn. Or anywhere else.
We’re not trying to be fancy. We’re not chasing algorithms and we’re certainly not measuring our relevance by engagement metrics, follower counts, or emoji reactions.
Sorry, we’re not on: X, LinkedIn, Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, YouTube, Pinterest, Threads, Snapchat, Tumblr, Reddit, WhatsApp Channels, Telegram, Mastodon, Bluesky, Substack, Medium, BeReal, WeChat, Line, VK, Signal, Discord, Clubhouse, Twitch, Quora, Periscope (R.I.P.), MeWe, Mix, Ello, Vero, Rumble, Hive, Steemit, Gab, Parler, Truth Social, Diaspora, Minds, Flipboard, Friendica, Plurk, Imgur, BitChute, SoundCloud, ReverbNation, Audius, DeviantArt, Gaia Online, TikTok Shop, Lemon8, Nostr, Zing, Wykop, Taringa, Douyin, Renren, Sina Weibo, Qzone, Baidu Tieba, Bebo (again: R.I.P.), XING (yes, really), Lokalisten, StudiVZ, Jappy, Myspace (just in case), Orkut, Habbo Hotel, ICQ (nope), IRC (seriously?), Path, Peach, Ello (still?), YO, Yubo, Rizzle, Houseparty, Kwai, Likee, DLive, Lasso, Vine (obviously not), Musical.ly (merge detected), VKontakte, Open Diary, FriendFeed, DailyBooth, Flixster, Netlog, iWiW, Skyrock, LiveJournal, CafeMom, Mixi, Hyves, and Google+ (you can stop laughing now).
Why?
Because we don’t waste time building a “social presence”
We use that time to read, to think, and to research.
Because we believe that good science needs rigor, not reach.
And sometimes, silence is more productive than scrolling.
Because we want to remain in control of our content not subject to the ever-changing terms and opaque algorithms of multinational platforms.
We publish on our own terms, in our own space.
Freedom of thought deserves freedom of format.
And if you’re still not convinced, here’s the perfect explanation in video form Luke Smith:
Why we really aren’t on social media
Still not convinced? Read at Richard Stallman’s personal page what’s bad about: Airbnb | Amazon | Amtrak | Ancestry | Apple | Change.org | ChatGPT | Cloudflare | Discord | Disney | Ebooks | Eventbrite | Evernote | Ex-Twitter | Facebook | FLIXbus | Frito-Lay | Frontier | Google | Gofundme | Grubhub | In-N-Out Burger | Intel | LinkedIn | Lyft | Meetup | Microsoft | Netflix | Patreon | Pay Toilets | Privatization | Skype | Slack | Spotify | Tesla | Threads | Ticketmaster | Uber | Wendy’s | WhatsApp | Zoom
