Abstract

The article examines the structure of the banking system of Ukraine. The dynamics of the number of banks and branches were analyzed, revealing a reduction in the number of banks and their operating divisions from the beginning of 2015 to the present.

The main reason for this reduction was the process of reforming the banking sector of the Ukrainian economy. The reforms led to the “cleansing” of the sector from insolvent and captive banks and increased the level of financial stability. The increased stability of the banking system, as a result of the National Bank of Ukraine’s reforms, is evidenced by its resilience and ability to perform its functions during martial law.

The study substantiates the following reasons for the reduction in the number of bank divisions in Ukraine: reduction in the number of banks, cost reduction in the post-crisis period, and an increase in the level of digitalization. Pandemic restrictions and martial law also influenced the growth of digitalization.

The analysis of the structure of the banking system of Ukraine established a significant share of state banks. This situation, to some extent, is a result of the reforms but distorts the competitive environment in the industry.
